Madelyn Scales-Harris was born and raised in Murfreesboro, TN. As a Murfreesboro native, Scales Harris was educated in Murfreesboro City Schools and graduated in the Central High School Class of 1970. She is a graduate of Middle Tennessee State University.

Madelyn worked for State Farm as a Business Account Underwriter until her retirement in 2014.

Madelyn was raised by a mother and father that were very active in the Murfreesboro community. Her father, Robert "Tee-Niny" Scales was the first black male Vice-Mayor in Murfreesboro history. Her mother, Mary Caruthers Scales,  would become the first female to serve on the Murfreesboro City Council. Madelyn follows in their footsteps as she became the first black female Vice-Mayor.
